History
The TG12410 transfer console was initially developed by EMI technicians to meet the needs of Abbey Road’s disk cutting and tape transfer facilities. The first of these was installed in 1972 and, having become popular with engineers at the studios, they were produced in greater numbers and installed in many of EMI’s overseas facilities.
The console featured the compressor/limiter and presence EQ from the TG12345 mixing console, as well as comprehensive metering and remote controls for tape machines and cutting lathes. The TG12412 Tone Control module was based on another EMI-built EQ unit from the 1950s, nicknamed the ‘Curve Bender’, which had been used on the previous generation of transfer consoles.
Over the years, the TG12410 consoles at Abbey Road Studios have been used to master countless famous recordings and, because of their superior sound and design, they are still in use today in the studios’ mastering and transfer rooms.
